Dec. 13- Les & Pam went looking for eggs and sweet rolls. Horcon's supermarkets are minis. We ended up in ConCon (30 minutes away) at about 10:00 when the stores were beginning to open. The eggs were wrapped 6 in a few sheets of newspaper. Curt had given Les & Pam a cold, or it could be allergies. Pam needed more meds so we visited the farmacia. A bakery shop provided us with bread and a lovely torte. We watched some surfers at a surf school. Les did a u-turn in the road which must not have been illegal, as the carbinieras across the street didn't stop us.
Mid afternoon Val & Pam headed to the beach and the restaurant. The gate was locked so we crawled through the window in the gatehouse. We figured that we could return to the top of the hill via the restaurant. It was election day – Yes, it is held on Sunday. So the restaurant was closed. The owner called the CauCau office to request that the gate be unlocked. They claimed that it was, but it wasn't. Another “Amazing Race” moment--- we crawled back through the window. Fortunately we were still clothed-- this was the former nude beach. Val took a pic of
Pam, but it may not make it to the blog.
Mom & Les were enjoying a warm spot amongst the beautiful flowers. We decided to return to ConCon for supper. Later in the day on Sunday the town was full of people and dogs. The empandas were FANTASTIC. We couldn't have cerveza because it was an election day. There are 4 candidates running with no primary. To win, someone must earn at least 51%. No one did. So now there will be another election in January for the top 2. They don't have absentee ballots, so it upsets people's summer vacations. The president's term is 4 years and they can't have a second term right after the first term.
We enjoyed 2 English speaking movies (Hallmark channel) in the evening.
Dec. 14- About 7 am I was enjoying the ocean view and noticed a fishing boat. I took my camera and captured the landing of the boat from afar. A horse pulls the boat ashore. Then the fog rolled in. It was a very relaxing day. We washed some clothes. We had a wonderful lunch of various seafood at El Ancla (The Anchor). We had a window-side table to watch people on the beach. Men kept going back and forth with pieces of lumber and other tools. Yesterday we had been looking for empanadas at a shop next to the hardware store which we never did find. After lunch we walked to some artisan's shops. On the way we saw men building a cabana. So the hardware (or lumber) store must be in the other direction. We bought some more Concha Y Toro wine at the Pamela shop. I have a lovely receipt and will have to get my photo taken at another time. Les is very glad that she is driving an automatic car on these narrow hilly streets full of people and stray dogs. We're enjoying a siesta at the condo and waiting for Gloria to arrive. Sunset is about 9 pm.
Before we left Santiago Gloria found a few chirimoya—3 grapefruit sized fruit (tastes like banana and pineapple). Val really liked these when she was here 31 years ago. It is nearly the end of the season.
Gloria arrived and told us about the wedding that they went to Saturday night. The ceremony was at 8:30 pm, followed by dinner and dancing. They went to sleep at 5 am. We chatted for a long time.
I am a day behind in posting.
