I'll be brief (and fill you in more later):
Italy : Pompeii and Herculanem( so full of history!) ,Tuscany ( many small towns, plus Siena, where St. Catherine lived), Assisi ( I felt so close to Sts. Francis and Clare when I was here. we even
visited St. Francis's favorite place,a peaceful hillside retreat where talking is still not allowed!), Florence( saw Michelangelo's David), Venice(one word:amazing) where I bought some venetian glass beads, and Pavia, where one of my mom and dad's friends from med school lives with her three kids. Her daughter Emma (13) is really nice and gave me an idea of what it's like to live in Italy.
Germany: First actually we were in Austria, where we picked up our rental car and stayed the night. Then the next day we drove into "Deutschland" and
spent the night in a cute little town called Mittenwald ( pronounced mittenvald).Then we drove 2 hrs to Lindau,an island on Lake constance, the
biggest freshwater lake in Europe. With that as our home base we visited the island of Mainau where the most beautiful garden I've ever seen in my life is,along with a cool playground that had a pond with rafts in it, and a castle in a town called Meersburg.Then on our way to Oberammergau we stopped at two castles, one of which King Ludwig II of Bavaria built. It was worked on for 17 years and never completely finished. It was gourgeous!
