How I travel

Since I am travelling with a scooter, I expect there may be people reading this who would like more information on how that works so I have included some information and hope that people will feel free to contact me directly.   I have travelled since I was in my 20's but have now developed arthritis in my knees, along with nerve damage. Rather than stop travelling I acquired a Pride Go Go Elite Traveler scooter.  Although I only use it for shopping and going for a "long walks" with friends while I am at home, when I travel I take it everywhere with me from San Francisco to Alaska and across Europe, South America and the Middle East (see previous Blog). I can walk a few blocks, stand for 20 minutes or use forearm crutches to go a further but if I am going to wander the streets of Italy, or Ephesus, I need to use a scooter . I can get off the scooter and move it over a bump or two which makes it possible for me to go places that might be a little tricky for someone permanently in a wheelchair or even a power chair. I know of people who feel getting a scooter is "giving up" but I think sitting at home is "giving up". Until the knees (or the bank account) give out, I hope to be able to visit even more countries and learn more about the many different cultures on this globe of ours. Travel teaches tolerance and respect for others and keeps one from believe that there is only one way to do things. At least it does that for me.  I will be using drivers and guides who are experienced at making sure one gets as close as possible to the the things each country has to offer.   This blog will provide information on what I can see and how easy it is to travel this way as well as pictures of the sites and some of the crazy things that may happen. As I said if anyone wants to know more about how to travel with a Scooter, email me and I will provide whatever information I can.

Croatia Slovenia and Rome

I started this trip by visiting some old friends in Seattle and from there flew to Frankfurt and on to Zagreb, Croatia. The visit was great  - the flight to Croatia was a nightmare because they insisted on checking my scooter direct to Croatia as I only had an hour between flights and they assured me that someone would be waiting with a wheelchair. Well the airport was very crowded because of excessive flights due to the huricanne and we had to park on the tarmac and go in by bus to the terminal.  Stairs down, walking into terminal across tarmac after bus ride.   No wheelchair at the terminal so had to walk to handicapped service and wait while they rounded one up then had to walk between elevator rides and down into the plane. With long rides in between terminal areas.  A real horror show for everyone who was trying to make flights and needed help.  Very short staffed for the number of people needing assistance.   Zabreb the same walking with carry-on luggage to get suitcase and scooter and then found canes were lost and had to report.   I will never again let them book my scooter over two flights, especially when connecting through a large airport.  Far too much confusion.   I could have gotten around twice as fast on my own - assuming, of course, I did not get lost but there are lots of people to help with directions.

For now, I can say that the hotel is great, with wonderful restaurants and  pool, whirlpool and sun deck and friendly staff.  The pool I will use this afternoon.  I will stay in Zagreb for 5 days, touring an amazing amount of art and architecture dating back hundreds of years.   I then plan to tour Slovenia and down the whole coast of Croatia and then to Rome.  Now I am off for another hour or more of sleep. and ice pack on my knees.  No photos on this one.

Glad to see you are on the road again. Enjoy following your travels. You will love the coast of Croatia and think you are in a fairy tale city in Dubrovnik. Enjoy and will watch for future posts.

Laura - you absolutely MUST INSIST on having your scooter brought up at intermediate stops. Have the airline doortag it at point of origin to first plane change stop. They have no business treating you like that. I've been in this situation when travelling with other scooter users, and that type of treatment is not acceptable.

Ouch! Sorry about the lack of handicap helpers for you! Also loved your scooter travel info. What a way to go..as your travel blogs show!

I agree Laura, that kind of treatment is not acceptable. Hope the rest of your journey is a wonderful experience. Thanks for the update.
