As I said previously, I really wanted to get out of the Sheraton Hotel and look around the Town of Luxor but since I was travelling on my own and on a scooter to boot, the guides look at me as if I was nuts to even ask and told me it was not safe for a woman on her own who is Western and looks as if they might have money.  So I settled for a carriage ride, this time with a guide, which in this town cost me 4 times as much as in Edfu - why I do not know.  Anyway, very enlightening ride and I had to agree - even though in a carriage, I had small children presenting me with a flower and asking for money, and in the market, merchants shouting about their wares, and I won't even talk about the amont of garbage and dirt in the street.  This country has such wide contrasts.  The tourist sites are clean, even if the washrooms cost, and the hotels I have been at are clean (if you don't count the cockroach I came across in one of the bathrooms - they were as horrified as I was and I will not name the hotel because I liked everything else about it),  but the general population seems not to notice dust and grime and remains cheerful, friendly but always after money. Enough said.
