We still had some time for one final goodbye as we headed off to the tallest tower for a special view of Bangkok at night. We were lucky to avoid the tropical thunderstorm which seemed the perfect signal for the end of our amazing adventure.
As I reflected in my final bed that evening it was clear to me that the highlight has been the people that we had met along the way.
A few days later on a cold day back in Kent I ended up sharing a table with a 95 year old English man in the coffee shop at Waitrose.
It turned out that he had been a prisoner-of-war in Thailand. So here I was talking to a man who had helped built the railway line that we had traveled on. As his story unfolded it also turned out that he was sent onto Japan once the railway was finished. Again another strange co-incidence as Japan will be the location for our next adventure.
Like the people we had met on the way this man had no gripes with his enemy and was still very supportive and proud of his country.
