After a night on the train we arrived on the 24th and Langkawi Island was the perfect place to celebrate my birthday on the 25th and Charlies on the 28th, due to the tax free alcohol that is available.

The weather was terrible for my birthday so I celebrated in a very British manor, drinking beer all day followed by a curry in the evening. Whilst Charlie had some great weather for hers so we spent the day on the beach.

Because of the islands beaches and cheap booze it is a very popular holiday destination with Malays, and especially Malay Muslims. I have always found it very strange seeing a female Muslim wearing a burqa on the beach and swimming in the sea. But they let really let their hair down whilst in Langkawi, as we once witnessed a banana boat loaded with 5 shrieking burqa clad women come bobbing past out at sea. It really took the biscuit.

Admiring the Malay holiday makers with us were a British / Irish couple we met on the beach called Rich & Jeanette. It turned out they were living in Belfast on Windsor Avenue, the street next to my parents house. They had just got married and we enjoyed spending time on the beach with them and crashing their honeymoon.

After 5 nights and 2 birthdays we bought 4 litres of tax free Jack Daniels and attempted to smuggle the booze across the Malaysian peninsula and on to the our next stop the Perentian Island. The journey was quite a difficult one taking 15 hours, 2 buses and 3 boats before we reached our destination.
