The idea behind coming to Hsipaw was to try and get off the beaten track a little bit and try and see some people who still lived a very traditional life. To do this we took a pick up truck to the small town of Namsham and then planned to walk back to Hsipaw.

We stayed a night in Namsham before setting off back down the mountain.

The people we met along the way were really interested in us and we received countless invitations to join families for a cup of tea. The language barrier did make it a little bit awkward, especially when we joined the reception of a local wedding. This involved Charlie and I sitting in the middle of a room whilst the rest of the wedding party sat around the outside staring at us eating our lunch.

After the first day walking we asked a family if we could stay with them for a small fee. We slept on the floor and joined them for a great meal in the evening.

After our second day of walking for 8 hours in the hot season, we couldn't take it any more. So we had to hitch a lift on a moped back to Hsipaw. There was no road just a steep path cut by walkers and mopeds. It made for a very scary journey, but after 2 hours and only 1 crash, we made it back to Hsipaw in one piece.

We spent a night in Hsipaw before catching a bus back to Mandalay. (Being very careful to select one which had fully functioning windows.). Then a night in Mandalay before catching a 10 hour over night bus to Inle Lake
