Where I stayed
Salum's House

We spent the day with Matt & Cathy followed by a night out and a sad goodbye as they set off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

The next couple of days Charlie and I explored the island with a moped using Salum's house as base.

The roads were pretty bad, and I suspected some of the local drivers may never have even sat their drivers theory test. So, you can imagine what an unaccommodating place Stone Town is to learn how to drive a moped.

We got through the experience without injury, and the only incident was when we were stopped by the police and told that it was illegal to drive a vehicle in Tanzania that was not covered on your driving license. He then presented us with two options. To appear in front of a judge in Dar Es Salaam in six weeks time, or, to pay a $10 "penalty". We decided on the $10 "penalty" and handed over our VISA card. He paused for a couple of seconds, before realizing he was dealing with some serious idiots, and waved us through without explaining that bribes are not normally paid for with VISA card.

Much of the island is quite expensive, so I introduced Charlie to the Fetherston tradition of attending posh resorts armed with a picnic. After a couple of different destinations we took the two hour ferry to Dar Es Salaam on the main land.
