Day at the Grand Canyon.
Set off with cloudy skies and rain, which remained as we got to the car park at Grand Canyon Village. Headed straight for Mather's Point on the South Rim and were greeted with a bank of cloud in the Canyon (see pic!). Flown 5,500 miles and paid $25 entrance to not see a thing!
Luckily it started to clear before lunch, revealing bits of the Canyon all the while. By 3pm the clouds had evaporated and we could see the full splendour.
We walked 2 miles along the Rim then got bus back to the car.
Decided to drive east along the Rim to Desert View, the final viewpoint of the Canyon. There's a tower there which you can climb to see even further. Desert View was the highlight of the trip, great views of the Canyon plus you could see 90 miles to the North.
Headed back to Flagstaff and came across a mini canyon formed by the Little Colorado River (the Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon). So we pulled in and got some good shots there. There were also lots of Native American stalls there so we bought jewellry and a clay painted kayak. Caitlin (and Siby) didn't get out of the car. Caitlin said she didn't like 'foreigners' so we had to explain that these were the native people of America and we were on their land (as are all Americans). I think she was still suffering from the shoick of poor Mexicans in Tijuana.
We also detoured to view Sunset Volcano Crater, which I got a shot of, apparently it erupted 1,000 years ago and has been dormant since.
Tea was takeaway from Dominos and Jack-in-the-Box.
Early night as off to Las Vegas tomorrow am.
