Where I stayed
Rest, relax or repair is the choice for today! This is also the opportunity to take a flight to see the Grand Canyon - helicopter or fixed wing planes are available....
We were up at 5-30am to sort out the car problems before the sun rose high above Page and Lake Powell. After approx. 3 hours we were able to fix most of the small problems but the troublesome lack of overdrive remained. Without overdrive i.e. lower fuel consumption (even with 2 tanks) we would have to carry extra petrol in cans in car for the very long stretches in Alaska without fuel stations. The solenoid appeared to be the problem but a replacement did not work. By 10am many cars were undergoing maintenance and these problems are likely to worsen as we cover the extra rugged miles heading north through Canada and Alaska.
At lunchtime, we were about to venture out for a walk around the lake when the hotel advised us that our 4pm flight down to the Grand Canyon had been moved forward to 2pm due to the weather conditions moving in later that afternoon. We agreed to take the earlier flight as this would be our only chance for a while to take the trip. We found that we were to be the only passengers on the 6 seater Cessna flight as all the other customers that day had not been able to shift to the earlier slot – a private flight for 2 then! The trip to the canyon was unforgettable – stunning even from 3000ft. There were quite a few bumpy moments but we were too preoccupied with the views below to care too much. As we landed 1 ½ hours later, sure enough the high winds started to blow and the sky looked threatening. All later flights were cancelled, so it was our lucky day.
The evening saw us in downtown Page and not much choice of restaurants. We have noticed that our accents are really throwing the locals as we need to rephrase virtually everything “Your accent is real nice but I don't understand a word you're sayin'!”
We seemed to have moved up the leader board to 2nd overall.
