Well, this is it, our last few hours in Australia, and they get off to a good start. We're greeted by the usual Oz style dawn chorus when we get up at seven o’clock. When I go out to the car, the tree opposite our room is absolutely teeming with flocks of noisy Rainbow Lorikeets and there was also a couple of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos that are being fed outside the door of the motel reception by the receptionist... absolutely marvellous, what a send off...! I think we're going to really miss all the wonderful birdsong we've been used to over the last four weeks.
After our last healthy breakfast, rounded up for us by Elaine from the nearby American Embassy (as McDonalds was called by one of our guides at Alice Springs), we’re on the road for the very last time and heading for Sydney Airport. We left ourselves two hours to do a ninety minute journey, plenty enough time we thought, but the traffic in Sydney resembles the M25 at rush hour, but it most certainly wasn’t rushing! The Sydney traffic is something I certainly won't miss, it was a nightmare getting out of town with John a couple of weeks ago, and now it's just as difficult trying to get back in...!!! Just to compound the situation, our brilliant TomTom gets us to the tunnel by the airport with just a couple of minutes to spare before the car is due back, and for the first time it lets us down, though it wasn’t really it’s fault. The final instruction should have been to take a left turn for the airport while still in the tunnel, but the satellite signal was lost because of the tunnel and we missed the turn. The only option open to us now was to drive all the way round the perimeter of the airport to get back to the entrance again. This meant that the car was now late in being returned, but I needn’t have worried, as in true Aussie style the guy at the rental company wasn’t the least bit worried. Don’t you just love their laid back attitude?
The wait for our flight seems to fly by (fly by... get it...?) and we’re soon going through to the departure lounge... but where is our A380? For some reason we’re not getting one for the first leg of our journey, though there will be one for the onward leg from Singapore. We needn’t have worried, as the replacement aircraft was of the same specification seat wise as the Airbus, so all was well with the world again, apart from the fact that we didn’t want to leave, ohhh how we didn't want to leave...!!! As on the way out a month ago, the flight to Singapore was perfect, with faultless service from the cabin crew again. Singapore Airlines... you're simply the best. (Now, promise me you'll not burst into a rendition of a well known Tina Turner song at this point...!!!)
