We were up quite early this morning as we needed to get on the road as soon as possible. This was because there were lots of things for us to see during our two day journey over to Singleton. After a leisurely breakfast we sadly had to leave Jeannette & Rex and head off to The Blue Mountains. As we neared our destination the weather still wasn't being very kind to us, there was a heavy mist and it's still quite cold, hopefully we’ll drive into some better weather soon.
Our first stop is at Bathurst to check out the National Motor Racing Museum and the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit. The first thing we saw as we approached the circuit was a dedicated safety road sign and it read; "Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit. For some it's a rush. For others it's a pilgrimage." Well, for me it was definitely both, having followed the Australian V8 Supercar Series for some time now, and was just fantastic to be able to drive the complete track as used on race days. But first it was a visit to the museum, and as the girls weren't too interested in it, I zipped around quickly, taking photos of almost everything in there. They certainly had some interesting race cars from different race series, but the main focus was on the V8 Series and what led up to its present day format. Next the raceway was calling me, it uses public roads, and although you can't exceed 60kph it was still quite a buzz to drive on the same track as all those famous racers. It had to be done, even if it was only in a Suzuki Grand Vitara...!!! I very quickly discovered that I certainly was no Jamie Whincup, as I managed to get it very wrong at Forrest's Elbow and understeered right across the track. Mind you I did have the wheel in one hand while trying to take photos with the other at the time...!!!
From here we travelled on to the Jenolan Caves, and as we crested the top of the mountain on the way we drove through fields of snow!!! The drive down into the valley was interesting, with a very steep & winding road. We only had enough time to visit one of the many caves, and opted for Chifley Cave, which at a constant 17c was warmer than it was outside! It was huge and an interesting experience, especially when they turned the lights off for a moment to show us just how dark it was in there... it was certainly darker than a dark thing...!!! An interesting little fact: Chifley Cave was the first in the world to be illuminated with electric light.
After this we had to start thinking about finding somewhere to stop for the night, and after another interesting drive out of the valley, we were back on the main highway. The first place we checked out was in Mt. Victoria, called the Mt. Victoria Motor Inn, and here we stayed as the price was right and the room was perfect. Getting something to eat wasn’t as straightforward though. You know who (Elise) only wanted pizza, so we ended up having to drive to the next town of Blackheath to get one. The things you do for love...!!!
