San Francisco has given me the biggest headache in finding somewhere to stay - it is so dear! I certainly couldn't come anywhere near my $100 a night (not in a decent area in the city anyway, and FOMC did not want to be on the outskirts). Parking is another issue, with many city hotels charging up to $40 a day for parking.

So we have ended up with a 1-bedroom suite with a kitchenette and lounge room at Grosvenor Suites on Nob Hill (which apparently is a pretty big hill!). We should be within walking distance of Union Square and Chinatown, but I'm thinking a taxi to get back to the hotel - while FOMC has been walking home from work every day, I haven't been quite as diligent about increasing my fitness level in preparation for the trip (does walking around Chermside shopping centre for 2 hours once a week count as exercise?). The views from the suites are supposed to be fantastic.

Things we plan to do in SF are a night tour to Alcatraz and the Exploratorium (a hands-on science museum).

I guess we'll go for a ride on a cable car, but apparently you can wait a long time to actually get on them, as every other tourist in SF is trying to do the same thing!

After four nights in SF, we drive to Yosemite National Park.
