Day 2 at Pismo Beach and we adjusted to US time by sleeping for 11 hours and waking up at 8.30 am. We had our breakfast at the hotel's restaurant, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. As we  watched the waves crash onto the rocks, we noticed a clump of seaweed drifting about. But then it waved - it was an otter! We also saw a seal. The cliffs around the hotel are home to many seagulls and pelicans and Treasure Number 2 took a liking to a juvenile seabird whose parents had left it at the hotel pool, presumably while they went off to feed.

The fog here is amazing. LA was hazy, but in Pismo it can quickly go from clear skies to fog, which rolls in from the ocean and lowers the temperature immediately. We saw it on the highway as we approached Pismo yesterday and thought there must be a bushfire, but it was only the fog.

We hit the shops today, finding a Walmart and buying prepaid cell phones and a GPS unit for the car. Hopefully we will be able to sell these to other Aussies heading to the States after we return home. We found a BBQ chook for lunch, but American bread/bread rolls are awful - really soft, sweet  and always seem stale. The shops are full of Halloween stuff and the treasures couldn't go past kits with fake blood, goulish facepaint and vampire fangs.

They spent the afternoon in the heated pool and spa and chatted to some fellow travellers. T2 said that she likes Americans. We then headed down to the beach so FOMC could try choowder (ref: The Simpsons) for dinner. We had seen a run down little shopfront last night with a queue of people out the door waiting for chowder, which is served in a bread bowl. FOMC declared it very good - we don't know exactly what chowder is, but swimming in the creamy soup were what we think were clams!

Every one is so polite, even at stop signs. We're darned if we can work out the give way rules - it seems that if you get to the intersection first (each road has a stop sign, there are no "give ways") you get to go first. Then the next arriving car goes, whether they are on your right or left. Or maybe we just look like idiot tourists and they are being nice to us!
