Show trip route
I'm nervous because the father of my children (let's call him FOMC for short) has convinced me that rather than hopping into a nice cozy bed after a 13-hour flight, we should hop into a hire car and set off for the coast.
We have booked a mid-size SUV for the first two weeks and the plan is to take four days/nights to drive up the Pacific Highway to San Francisco. This (particularly the part between Big Sur and Monterey) is supposed to be one of the world's best and most beautiful drives.
Our first stop will be Pismo Beach for two nights, then a cabin in Big Sur for night 3. Somewhere between these two (I think) is an elephant seal rookery - I'm told that we will see heaps of onlookers and know when to stop! Another local attraction we may visit is Hearst Castle. Pismo also has an outlet centre - can I start shopping on day 1 of our trip? I'm sure I can!!
Friends tell us Big Sur is stunning and as FOMC is a great outdoors type, I'm trying to include stops that cater to him ("I do not want to do a theme park tour of the States" he keeps saying. Well, the other three members of this family do - so who do you think will win?)
Night 4 is in Monterey, where we will visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium (can't wait to see the sea-horse exhibit) and then it's on to San Francisco!
