Our departure day finally arrived - and gee was it a long one! The flight on VAustralia was pretty good, apart from the fact that it took 13 hours (but it would be hard to get to LA from Brisbane any quicker, so we shouldn't complain). The in-flight entertainment was fabulous: individual touch screens with stacks of movies, TV shows, music and games to choose from. The food was quite acceptable too, although they somehow neglected our order for kids meals. I have to give the FAs credit though - they firstly rustled up chicken wraps from business class (rejected by our fussy treasures - and that wasn't a bad thing, as I was remembering the food poisoning episode on Virgin recently which involved chicken wraps) and then made cheese and Vegemite bread rolls, which went down a treat with Treasure Number 2.

We were so glad to get off the plane, only to face being fingerprinted at US customs - it's standard now (and pulled up by the sniffer beagle. Thanks Treasure Number 1 - I thought you ate that apple back at Brisbane Airport!).

But it was all good. We caught a shuttle to pick up our rental car: a brand new Ford Escape SUV - and all the luggage fitted! It's very comfortable, with icy air-conditioning. FOMC did a fabulous job driving out of LA, heading north on Highway 1, while I navigated. I would have preferred to be sleeping (as the treasures soon were), but I was needed to periodically point out, calmly of course, that we were drifting onto the right-hand shoulder. Yikes!

So we made it to Pismo Beach. It was supposed to take about four hours, but I really can't say how long we drove for, as we assumed the clock in the car was correct - only to find that the clocks in the hotel room are about three hours earlier. The sun hasn't gone down yet, so I suspect that the day was not quite as long as it seemed. We have a gorgeous view straight out to the ocean and are looking forward to crashing in bed tonight.
