Onwards! After our morning game drive in Lake Manyara N.P. (some of the photos are in the previous entry) we headed up the escarpment past Ngorongoro Crater,  stopping for our first glimpse of the world's largest crater and a natural 'zoo'.  I was impressed by its size.  We are coming back here in a few days, so more about the crater later.
After passing Masai villages and vast plains, we entered the Serengeti NP and took the opportunity to climb up a 'kopje' which is a rocky outcrop, typical of many in the area. Climbing past some zebras munching on the grass, we were rewarded with a panoramic view of the massive Serengeti plains.  From here on in, the road was unsealed and we had to close the windows to keep out the dust whenever we passed or met a vehicle.  It felt like we were driving through a real life set of 'The Lion King'.  As our lodge was near the western end of the park, we had to drive quite a distance and the area had recently experienced rain, so of course, the road deteriorated again! As well, because we had dawdled at our various stops,(who would have thought watching a pride of sleeping lions would be so interesting?) our driver was becoming anxious as he had to get us to the lodge by 7 pm.  No vehicle is allowed to drive in the park after then.  I am not quite sure what happens if the deadline is not met, but luckily we didn't have to find out.
