took advantage of very short gap in 4-day conference schedule for free time....another Aussie plus our single Kiwi colleague joined me for an hour drive out of the city, in a rented Chrysler PT Cruiser, to the nearby Superstition Mountains (Apache country & national park area).
We saw Canyon Lake in Tonto National Park, then visited Tortilla Flats (population 6) for an excellent lunch, and were entertained by a live band in an outdoor barbeque area.
The hills, canyons & huge, mountainous plateaus have to be seen to be believed....they look just like something out of an old western movie....except for the power lines draped thru the valleys! Stunning scenery indeed.
On our return to the resort, we attended necessary afternoon sessions, then enjoyed an outdoor western meal under the stars....an interesting & enjoyable start to my time in the states.
