Slowly we drove down the coast, stopping at almost every scenic overlook or wayside we passed. The Oregon coast has been one of my favorite parts of the trip so far. It's absolutely gorgeous with big sandy beaches and nice waves, and to top it all off we had perfect weather. We kept having to remind ourselves that this the blue skies and sunny days we saw are a rare state in this region.

At one point along the way, I was driving and Jonas suddenly yelled, "Oh, hey, turn around! Did you see that place? It was a smokehouse! It looked legit!"

"Hmmm...'legit' legit? Or 'Jonas legit'?" I asked. His huge grin told me it meant 'Jonas legit'.

Sure enough, we pull up to a tiny, dingy building with a hand lettered sign (I'm talking colored marker on poster board) advertising Karla's Smokehouse, and making it very clear that you will get to buy whatever they decided to smoke that day, and nothing more.

We walked in to find a rather large gal missing a number of teeth cackling loudly behind the register at something a customer said, then saying "Karla's been smoking fish since before I was born, and I'm 46". Jonas turned to me and said "See? This is going to be amazing!" We found four paper plates on the counter, piled with four different kinds of smoked fare on them: oysters, salmon, black cod, and the leftover bony bits from the fish. We shrugged and asked for a little bit of each.

Sure enough, it was some of the best smoked salmon I've had, and we snacked on the treats for the next few days.

We stopped for a few days in Cape Blanco State Park, situated on a bluff right near a picturesque lighthouse. We wandered the area for a while, toured the lighthouse, and took a long walk down the beach. It was really windy and quite chilly, and I think the weather and traveling were beginning to take a little toll on me. I was feeling pretty exhausted by late afternoon, and Jonas suggested we go on a date. What? I haven't showered in days, my face is bright red with windburn, I am freezing, and I smell like a walking campfire. But Jonas had a different idea, and he made me a big hot cup of tea, put me in the car, opened a bag of popcorn, and turned on our 23 disc set of Harry Potter. "Movie night!.... sort of" he said. We sat in the car listening to Harry Potter for an hour or so, and it sounds really stupid, but it was exactly what I needed! I got my second wind, we cooked up a nice dinner and hung out by the campfire afterwards.

After almost a week along the coast, we were ready to head into the redwood forests of California and see some big ol' trees!!
