Before heading to the airport, I decided to visit a Kranji War Memorial. For those of you who have been following my journey, you know that I like visiting and paying respects at war memorials/cemeteries in each country I travel to, where there was a Japanese invasion during WWII.
For breakfast I went to Chinatown and had some dim sum for the last time :'-(. I hopped on a train, and took an hour train ride north of Singapore. I had read online that the cemetery was about a 15 minute-walk from the train station. So when I got off the train, I looked around for signs. Nothing. Then I asked the ticket booth staff and he gave me general directions. I followed it for 30 minutes, and no cemetery - not even signs for it! Weird.
I pulled out my iPhone and looked at google map
But this was not cool. No signs or path to help guide tourists. Anyway...I found it thanks to google map and my navigation instincts ;-))))
The Kranji War Cemetery was beautifully manicured and maintained - not that I expected anything less in Singapore. No matter how many times I visit these places, it never gets easier. I can't help but think of the living conditions these men must have endured, the fear that must have consumed them in their last moments, and the families that were certainly devastated and whose lives were forever changed by their losses.
Feeling a bit sullen, I hopped on a train heading back to town. A young white girl sat next to me, and started chatting with me about my travels. She introduced to me as Sister Petite A nun! She was originally from the States but grew up in France and Holland. She has been living in Singapore for 3 months volunteering to be of service to human kind :-))). She was so interesting to talk to, but unfortunately had to get off after a few stops. What an interesting meeting, after a visit to a cemetery.
So I think today officially marks as my last day as a traveler. Tomorrow I begin my new life as an expat :D
