I never dreamed that I would ever get to see it LIVE! I had dived in beautiful coral reefs and swam with so many types of pretty tropical fish - but not in an active hunting environment!! On Day 2 of my 5-day liveaboard trip, I was diving INSIDE the tornado of small fish, with a school of giant travellies and 9 white-tip sharks circling around us. All I kept thinking was "holy shit!!!!" I had never been seen anything like it in my entire life.
Later in that afternoon, we dived with 6 mantas, 2 of which were black mantas! I had never seen those before. Oh, they were breathtaking. On Day 3, our dive masters took to a "top secret" location where they had only dived twice themselves. It is an undisclosed dive site where the corals are untouched and pristine. I saw so many new forms of life, and the colors of the corals were some of the brightest I had ever seen, from neon yellow to fire orange. Just WOW. I was speechless when we came above water. I also saw a translucent crab with long, branchy claws. When I looked up this crab in the Pacific Creatures book, it was labeled as "undetermined" because of its rarity. How freaking cool!!
Needless to say, this liveaboard trip in Komodo topped all my expectations. Every diver I had met along my journey told me that Komodo is a world class diving destination. They were not kidding.
The sea life in Komodo was absolutely the BEST I had ever seen. Everything in Komodo is super-sized. Imagine diving with goldfish for years, thinking you had seen the best. Then in Komodo, you see all the goldfish are the size of a Koi! The fish in Komodo are enormous and so incredible. Almost in every dive, I was saying to myself under water "what the heck...!" because I had never seen puffer fish, travellies, trigger fish, bat fish and angel fish so huge
I also saw some new fish including mandarin fish!! They have bright orange and green wave patterns on their body and absolutely beautiful.
The life on the liveaboard was very similar to the liveaboard in Thailand. The crew was amazing, always looking after us from our dive equipment to feeding us 3 meals and snacks in between. There boat was a bit smaller, with a capacity of 8 guests. But there were only 5 of us so we had a plenty of space to spread out and enjoy our down time. Me and Elodie, a girl from Switzerland, shared a cabin with 2 twin beds. But as I did on my Thailand liveaboard, I didn't bother sleeping in the cabin. I slept on the deck of the boat under the stars and with a fabulous sea breeze :)
Every time I dive, I am in awe of the beauty and wonders of the underwater world. I have been blown away countless times throughout my journey in SE Asia. But this Komodo trip in particular made me so grateful to be alive, to be able to witness beauty of this magnitude.
Ikitete yokatta :)
