Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, which makes traveling time-consuming and expensive. I had to do a ton of research on flight schedules and map out distance between islands to determine the best way and places to spend my 30 days in Indo. I have 3 domestic flights within my 30-day visit, and 3 scheduled scuba diving trips. I think Indo will be my most expensive destination yet!

We arrived in Sumatra last night after 14 hours of traveling. We flew into and spent a night in Medan, which is the fourth largest city in Indo. It was definitely congested, with automobiles and scooters zooming by all through the night. The air felt polluted and we were happy to depart for Lake Toba in the morning. The guesthouse we stayed at was cheap, at $9 for a room with 2 twin beds and no aircon. We had a shared bath with only cold shower and a toilet with a bucket flush. It was a drastic downgrade from a nice beachside resort we left behind!

This morning, we hopped in a car service for a 4-hr ride to Parapat, where we were rushed into a ferry to a town of Tuk Tuk. The total transportation today cost us $8 per person for the entire trip! Nice. After checking into our $10/night batak house, we walked around Tuk Tuk for a bit and it's a really cute little town (although filled with mainly touristy souvenir shops and restaurants) with friendly locals and interesting plants!

The view of Lake Toba is so beautiful. The lake is HUGE, it almost looks like an ocean. There are hills and mountains in the horizon with a bit of mist. There is a nice breeze coming in from the lake and the weather is fantastic.
We plan to rent a scooter tomorrow and drive around this island of Samosir and check out the local scene :)
