I happen to think being disconnected from the world can be freeing. No Facebook updates. No current events. I'm in my own bubble of paradise, sunshine and good reads.
But I think it can be appreciated only when it is a choice. When the option to get online is deprived, it is restricting. I have no way to get in communication via Skype or email. I have no opportunity to research good spots for dinner. I cannot plan my next leg of the trip in Thailand or Laos. I feel stuck and helpless.
These are the moments when I realize how "normal" it was to have a high speed Internet and each page was uploaded in milliseconds. When all my bills were paid in 3 minutes. When dinner reservations or delivery orders were made with a click of a button.
These conveniences are no longer available to me now and I question how much of this remote-island-living I can tolerate. The lack of electricity, the inability to flush a toilet when power goes out, the inaccessibility to the Internet are all a bit overwhelming after just 12 days.
I haven't even been able to indulge myself in some ice cream (my favorite food!) due to the fact that this town has no power between 6am-2pm! I have not had a hot shower in nearly 2 weeks.
I think I'm ready to return to the city. Just for a little while.
Good thing I'm soon headed to Bangkok!!
