No parking at the hostel so we had to go accross the road and a park and abandon the car there by the side of the road. We went out for a walk around and found ourselves in an Irish pub called "the bog". Lets be honest the place was dead, the whole city was dead, it was Sunday night. On the wall of the bog pub there is a plaque showing the "100 pint club",There were lines of names and next to the names there were numbers ranging from 2 to 87. So we asked had nobody drank 100 pints of Guiness? only to be told that all these people have drank 100 pints of Guinness in this pub and the number refers to the number of times they have drank 100 pints...WOW! they must have been all broke the night we were there.
Anyway, we were staying at Cathedral Square, so we had a good look around the city center from here, the base backpackers wasn't too exctiing except for birds flying around the kitchen. Christchurch is a really nice place, the internation busking festival was on while we were here, so we managed to see some of the talent on offer incding a brilliant juggler on a moncycle.
We went to see the fantastic botanical gardens, they really are something. On a more sombre note there were crowds around Catedrale square to watch the funeral of Edmund Hillary on the big screen they had set up there for it.
That night we met up with Ray and he cooked us a delious dinner in his house, fare play to him, thanks Ray. We had a great night, so chatting and taking it easy.
