What I did
We checked out early to start driving south. Someone on the train had suggested an alternate to the interstate route---supposedly a beautiful ride. We took it, a longer distance, but much more interesting. We experienced the ever-changing life zones that we had seen previously and stopped several times just to appreciate a view or take photos.
A couple of worthwhile stops were Tonto National Monument and Roosevelt Dam. Tonto was another Indian ruin---intriguing but so steeply located we couldn't make it the whole way up. John's knee was in pretty bad shape, thanks to the Bright Angel Trail, and going down would have been very painful.
The Roosevelt Dam was at the Salt River and there is a beautiful bridge there also. The Roosevelt Lake/Salt River area was the most water we had seen in all of Arizona!
We arrived in Tucson around 5 PM. Jim met us in the driveway. We visited for a while and Donna served a wonderful dinner with creme brulee for dessert. Yummy! So good to see my brother and sister-in-law! It had been quite a few years since we had all been together.
