One morning, when things are relatively dry, I decide it is a good day to go to China. I take my backpack and hop on a mini buss to the border. It rains again. When I get my backpack it is soaking wet. The driver is laughing, but ain't funny. I check out of Laos and walk the 3 km to the Chinese border. I'm alone in no-man's land. I'm strangely unmoved by the revelation. It is hot and steamy, and I'm sweating all over. I should have taken the tuk-tuk when I had the chance.
So I finally, finally I enter China at 3:30pm, on Sunday afternoon. Bad timing, by the way, for all the banks are closed and the ATM does not like my Barclay's card.
Luckily the guys here are quite helpful. A couple of USD gets me a ride to near by Majhong, then a guy who speaks some English volunteers to pay for my hotel room, when the ladies at the reception refuse to give me a room on the promise to pay tomorrow. He is here on business. He offers to buy me a dinner. How can I refuse? I have 10 RMB in my pocket and nothing more than a late breakfast in my stomach.
What does Leo gets in return for all that helpfulness? A big, heart warm Thank you. He doesn't expect more. He is happy that he can practice his English and says - of course, no problem. All Asian people are very helpful, you should not be worried at all. Got to love this country.
