I think I spent a week or so in Pondi. Did some yoga, biked my bike (on the main street, in the traffic and along the much nicer waterfront) and read my book on the balcony of my 5-star view room. Ready to move now.

Pondy is a relaxed beach town (don't think that anyone goes bikini sunbathing though) with a French colonial flair and lots of French tourist in search of spirituality and good dining. There are more than a few nice restaurants that come for a price of course. Didn't dine in any of them. Instead, I hanged out in the wi-fi coffee shop a lot and unexpectedly but very happily acquired a travel partner. Sean is an easy going guy from Colorado. He was also headed to Goa for the New Years, so he said he'd be happy to tag along the southern route which I'm following. As a result, my "travel India" experience has changed. I get no hassle anymore, but no one speaks to me either. Walking into a restaurant with Sean consistently is greeted with "Yes Sir, would you like lunch/dinner?" He also gets the only menu card, gets served first and eventually gets the bill (which we split:).

Finding a hotel always follows the same routine:
"Hi, do you have two single rooms please?"
     "Yes, yes, two single rooms"
"Can we see?"
     "Sure, here is the room"
"But this is a double room. We need two single rooms!"
"You need two single rooms?! No one double? Are you sure, two single rooms?"
"Yes. Two single rooms"
"Oh, we only have one single room"
"Okay, how much is the double room?"
     "R250 ( about $6) for double and $200 ($5) for single"
"Fine then. We'll take one double and one single"
"One double and one single, okay. You want too rooms, not one?! Are you sure?" ...

... the whole procedure lasts anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes and it is profusely entertaining...

oh, the simplicity
I envy the 3 shirt choice. Enjoy for all of us who are stuck dressing up for the boss. And now every time I eat a salad I think of you.
