Sadly, Sunny Beach is not always sunny.  Our beach day a bust, the four of us road-trippers walked to the neighboring town of Nesebar, a World Heritage Site for its role as a stronghold during the Byzantine era as well as for the plethora of ruins and historic sites within the city.

After touring the city, the four of us got into yet another discussion of language differences over our delicious dinner of black sea bass.  So far on this trip, we've seemed to discuss language at least once a day in some context or another.  Here are some of my favorite language-based moments with Militza's mother:

--> "How do you say more than one man?" "Men." "Man?" "Men." "Man?" "Men." "It sounds the same! Man!" "Exactly! Perfect! ...men."

--> Me, coloring when given the difficult task of explaining to my friend's mom the meaning of the word "f*ck," along with all its various uses (complete, of course, with detailed examples).

--> Me, reading a Bulgarian word with the ever-elusive "uuh" sound to a response of laughter, then hearing the bald-faced lie, "Good! Perfect! That was perfect!"

--> Militza's mom, admitting that she could never tell if I was hungry, angry, or ugly, since all the "...gry" words in English sound the same.

Hi Oriana,

That's too funny. Are you ___gry much of the time? "I am so ugly I could eat a horse" "When's dinner? I'm angry." "Don't you ever get hungry? You are so sweet tempered."

Love,

Mom
