I canīt do this. I am living on about three hours of sleep a day. We stay up until six in the morning partying, like the Spaniards do, come back here to the hostel and crash. But then, at around nine the construction workers start drilling and working all over the hostel. This morning some dude came into our room with a toilet in his arms and then went into our bathroom and started banging away. So I had to get up of course, even though Iīm dead tired.
Itīs all good though. Last night three people came into our 6-person dorm room that, up until then, we had to ourselves. So, with true American ingenuity, we scoured the building quickly, made up a bogus story about returning to our room to find our beds taken and we talked to a bunch of English girls and somehow we ended up with one of their rooms totally to ourselves. It is a four-bed en suite. That means our own shower, sink and toilet (even though the toilet doesnīt work).
Sorry I donīt have anything more exciting to talk about. We have been in Barcelona for one day and two nights now and havenīt really done anything except go to clubs at night. Yesterday we said that we were going to the beach, that was at one oīclock. Guess when we actually got there. Around six. Itīs funny because the beach is pretty close, with buses and metros going there all the time.
I guess this is what happens when I leave the navigation up to Mike and Justen. We just wander aimlessly. Itīs Amsterdam all over again. It was not just the wandering though, we made so many detours. We made it to the harbor but then turned back to meet some girls Mike and Justen had met in San Sebastian, which turned out to be a total waste of time because they werenīt at their hostel when we got there.
Then we set out again, but got distracted by food and a digeridoo, which Mike and Justen tried to play but only managed to create deformed screams with. And, of course, they had to use them as a megaphone and shout, ĻEstados Unidos es numero unoĻ
They do that a lot. We walk down the main street here, Las Ramblas, and they shout it and talk loudly about how the United States is so much better than Europe. They say, especially Justen, how they could buy this whole place and that Americans keep continental Europe around just to party in and do whatever they want with.
Donīt get them wrong, I know most of it is jokes, but they actually do feel superior. I think it all started when we talked to these American girls with no luck and then when we got out of the bar, saw them in the street with a bunch of Spanish dudes. Justen got so mad, and I have to admit I did too, only for about fifteen minutes though. But Justen slammed one of the Spanish guys up against a wall.
Me, I really like Europe and I try to run and hide whenever Mike and Justen start on their American pride stuff.
I like Spain because I can communicate a little. Even if someone speaks English I always use Spanish, no matter how terrible my accent is or how limited a vocabulary I have. I donīt care I just speak Spanish. It works out anyways because usually if you start speaking Spanish with someone here, even if they also know English, they will continue to speak in Spanish with you.
In San Sebastian I used my Spanish a lot and was able to talk to girls that Mike and Justen couldnīt. I think Spain has spoiled me because now if I go to France or Italy I will be at a loss to communicate, especially in Italy.
I even got to use my Mandarin here. There were some Chinese girls from London nextdoor to us, whose first language was Cantonese, second was Mandarin and third was English. It was a relief because Chinese comes to me a lot more easily than Spanish does, I didnīt have to think so much like I have to with Spanish.
Today the plan is to go to the Picasso Museum, but I donīt know if that will actually pan out. I donīt have high expectations for us in that area. Hereīs to hoping I actually get a decent nightīs sleep as well!

ĄAdios amigos!
