The Sunshine Coast certainly lived up to its name for us. We travelled down through Maroochydore, Noosa then on to Mooloolaba where we decided to stop for a few days and spend some time on its beautiful beach. Mooloolaba itself seems to be a popular holiday destination for Australians, again, travelling from the cold south at this time of year to catch some rays and make use of the surfboards.
Our campsite was conveniently located approx 20m from the beach and still in the centre of town. The main esplanade here is made up of small boutiques, cafes and bars all along the beach with their famous kebab shops, which I must add, are damn good and nothing like back home.
We were also lucky one evening to see the 'nippers' in action at the beach as we sat with our beers watching the sun going down (photo attached). The 'nippers' are a household name in Australia. These guys and girls are the young lifesavers who train 3 times a week down at the beach. They all have their surfboards and dash out to a marker in the sea, run back up the beach and tag the next person and so on. The Australians take these kids seriously and mums and dads encourage their young ones to join up from an early age.
After a few days in Mooloolaba, we then headed further down the coast to Caloundra. The main reason for stopping here was to go and visit Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo in Beerwah, just north of Brisbane.
The zoo itself was a huge disappointment for us. The majority of the animals that were in the zoo, we have seen before, and seen them in the wild, including crocs, in North Queensland.
Maybe with Steve's absence, the atmosphere was dampened and it just didn't have that same edge to it, or maybe it's simply a case of 'seen one zoo, seen em all' !! Who knows ? ... Sorry Steve.
I'm not gonna come on here and hype all the main attractions up. Just telling people exactly how it is !
Anyhow, the Sunshine Coast is beautiful and really must be seen, have a look at the photos !!
