here are our austrian riding stories and photos...
ahhh, german the deutch, it's really hard for us to understand but the peoples we met in austria were so nice it barely mattered, and many of them spoke english...

we road into austria near the znojmo, czech boarder but chose a smaller gravel road to cross into a tiny austrian town.  soon we found that all of austria is a bike route network.  many tourism offices, and full country bike path (radweg) maps were kindly supplied.
we crossed austria from the north east across to the east, then south into a tad of hungary back into austria again heading south into slovenia.

eastern austria is really pretty, ranging from vineyards to rolling hills and some mountain.  people are really proud of their country and seem to feel lucky for such beautiful nature.
we felt welcomed and safe to sleep/camp just about anywhere.  after discovering the woods and farm fields stirred with pigs at night we stayed away and camped closer to towns where we met many nice folks.

after our pig field camp night we decided to sleep closer to a town and found a cute little village along the radweg with two little ponds and a makeshift truckstop.

we took the route along the neuseedlersee, a lake which is surrounded by vineyards.  there we had a great campspot in an old field house turned into a sun shelter for the vineyard farmers. great view of the intricately organized rows of vines.

camped behind a firehouse the friday before easter and witnessed the yearly tradition of racket making little wheeleygigs by the towns kids.  they were sooo excited because they had the job of waking the town with their racketmakers at 6am and the night before was spent as a sleepover at the firehouse.  and to top it off we rolled into town and they wanted to chat and host us, sharing their elementary school english, chocolates, dirty jokes,  and video games with us.  the kids were really cute.  (question is their a lack of kids being born in austria? there are a lot of bilboards with nuclear family type images) the young firemen were a bit embarrassing in their attempts at friendship, they waited until they were drunk to come over to our tent and talk with us, unfortunately we had to offend them and decline their invites to drink beer but fortunately they were probably too drunk to remember the scene the next day.

our trip the next day into hungary was really fast , i mean fast, maybe 25km.  we rode through sopron through a little town along a bike trail and then over a hill back into austria.
