(Amy)  You know those periods in your life when you feel that you couldn't possibly be more sleep-deprived, only to be proven wrong again and again?  That pretty much sums up the past few months.  It seems as if we haven't had five moments to call our own, as school and soccer for our children (Jack, age 10; Katharine, age 9; and Alexander, almost 7), work for Jim, and grading and house-packing for me has been intense.  Through it all, however, I have had an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the trip we are about to undertake.  We get to spend 366 days together as a family, giving our children an unvarnished view of what the world looks like.  When Jim originally hatched the idea of the trip, it partially arose from a sense of how quickly our children are growing up, and that it would be such a gift to have a year with each other.  The process of actually planning it has been long and occasionally difficult, but we are finally at this point with 18 days to go.  Our friends have been incredibly supportive, even if the last few weeks have been a bit emotional.  Jack, Katharine, and Alex attend the most wonderful school on the planet, a Quaker pre-K  to 12 day and boarding school with a significant international student population called the Westtown School.  For them, the trip seems as if it will be an extension of their education instead of an interruption from it.  We hand off our house keys to the renters tomorrow, a lovely family whom we were very fortunate to find, so there's no turning back now!
