We had a 5-hour layover in Madrid before we hopped on our next train to Portugal. We walked to El Retiro, a big green park filled with tons of marble statues and monuments. Since it was our last day in Spain, we got chocolate con churros. At first when mine arrived, I thought it was melted chocolate because it was so thick. It was actually chocolate pudding in a mug. We saw the Palacio de Cristal, which is a big building with all its walls made of glass. There was also a statue to the devil, called El Angel Caido (the Fallen Angel). It seemed like all the pathways in the park led up to it. And the statue is exactly 666 meters above sea level.
We went to the train station afterwards and got on our first overnight train. There were four beds in our room so we shared it with a stranger. I thought the overnight train experience was good, and I only woke up once (my mom and Soph did several times).
