Monday 8th June 2009
Three fine mornings in a row – record!!!!!! We pack and head for Gem Tree north of Alice to do some Garnet fossicking.

Gem Tree is pretty barren country, about 70k in on the Plenty Hwy.  We set camp and take the arvo off.  Time for a beer!

Tuesday 9th June 2009
Up early.  Was a bloody cold night!  Collected our fossicking gear and followed Stuart to the lease.  A few instructions and away we started digging, sieving and washing.  The garnets are little black stones that when held up to the light show blood red through.  We fossicked from 9 till 1:30pm then headed back to Gem Tree to have the stones classed.  A few 3.25's and a few 4’s (sized by the mm’s that a stone could be cut to.)

Showered to wash out the dirt (bloody got in everywhere!!!) then headed up the highway.  Camped at Stuart’s Centre at the rest site with Barry & Pat and Eddie & Jill and had a great night.

Day 31 – Wednesday 10th June 2009
Up early to try to get some k’s under the wheels.  We saw a few memorials, John Flynn, another guy who died whilst building the overland telegraph line.  Lunch was at Tennant Creek.  From TC the terrain changed and we saw water lying in creeks and pans – the vegetation was much thicker and greener and the grass much taller.  Lots of trees too.

The Devils Marbles was the only stop of note.  A walk around a few snaps and off again.  We wanted to make Mataranka for a dip in the hot springs, but time was against us and we stopped at a roadside stop at Newcastle Waters for the evening.
