Where I stayed
Just a quick one from Koh Lanta as we were only here for a few days.
I enjoyed Koh Lanta more than Koh Phi Phi (except for the diving – that was amazing!). It’s much more relaxed and the beaches are virtually empty during the day.
The highlight of our stay here, for me anyway, was a visit to Lanta Animal Welfare. I found their website about a year ago and always wanted to visit if I ever came to Thailand. It was founded as an animal rescue centre just after the tsunami, as workmen who came to rebuild the island brought dogs with them, and then left them here when they left, and so the island developed a large number of strays
Koh Lanta has a majority Muslim population (whereas much of Thailand is Buddhist) and apparently Muslims do not view dogs favourably. They are considered to be unclean and so are not treated well. Some of the dogs at LAW had been abused, and one of them had had boiling oil poured over his head! People also try and kill the strays by putting poison or fish hooks into food. LAW takes in injured and abused strays and treats them. If they cannot be rehomed, they live at the centre for life. They never put a dog to sleep.
When we got to the centre a Thai couple were there having a gorgeous little cocker spaniel puppy vaccinated. We were shown around the centre by Adrian, one of the volunteers, and he introduced us to the dogs and told us a little about their backgrounds. Some of them were quite old and so would spend the rest of their days at LAW, but some younger ones were up for adoption within Thailand or abroad. So, Mum, you can expect delivery of three very cute puppies in a few weeks. Just kidding!
We stopped and played with some of the younger dogs and then Adrian asked if we would like to take some of the dogs out for a walk
I have been missing having contact with animals and so I really enjoyed visiting the centre and was glad we could help out, if only for an hour or so. It’s really sad to see the stray animals here, and while the cats seem to do ok, a lot of the dogs have broken legs, terrible skin and various other injuries. It’s probably a good thing I’m not here for long or I’d end up collecting them all up and looking after them myself. A plan for the future, maybe…
The rest of our time in Koh Lanta was spent wandering around the markets and at the beach. I got some awesome pictures of the sunset at Klong Dao beach.
We are heading back to Phuket now for a few days – thankfully to a different area this time. I don’t think I could face staying in Patong again!
Miss you all lots!
Love Helen. xx
