Where I stayed
We've been here 2 days and I haven't particularly liked Unawatuna, we'd heard that it was super touristy and not as nice as Mirissa. This was definitely sound advice, I would have liked to stay longer in Mirissa but although it is beautiful it's very quiet and we wanted to see for ourselves what Unawatuna was like, and it's a good base for a day trip to see the old fortress city in Galle.
Unawatuna is a strange place, based around a beach it's very ghost town like as it's low season and feels like Vang Vieng in Laos where the tourists are around, they're all just living like vampires and come out only at night. But here, there isn't much of an atmosphere, it's majorly overpriced and the beach is very average. However I've been spoilt so far!
We went to Galle for the afternoon which was lovely inside, felt like Hoi An in Vietnam but not as French. From the walls of the fort the view of the sea is very pretty, and inside you can really feel the Dutch influences! However we didn't stay long because it is so overpriced! So we wandered for a long time and made our one drink last for as long as possible. That night we headed back to Unawatuna and had a quiet night and classic cheapest option of Kottu for dinner.
Yesterday we spent the day at the beach and went out in the evening with a Dutch guy we met for our last night together.. we ate dinner at South Ceylon restaurant which had been recommended by some other backpackers and we weren't disappointed. Especially as the English owner showed us his 10 week old half English/ Sri Lankan babies which Soph was drooling over. After a brief drink at the so called place to be on a Friday night.... we were sufficiently horrified by Western women throwing themselves at Sri Lankan men and Sri Lankan men throwing themselves at the poor guy we were with, and went home to bed!
So today we're just hanging around waiting for our airport transfer which we're getting at midnight! Safe to say haven't particularly liked Unawatuna, it is scabby and so overpriced, although we're staying in a cool hostel run by a couple from Canada and Dubai who are letting us whale around until later.
However.... we have absolutely loved our time in Sri Lanka!!! It feels like we're here on the cusp of it becoming touristy and I'm so glad we got to see it before some places inevitably become like Unawatuna! Will update you again when we've met Daisy and are safely (stop worrying parents) in Mumbai!
