Arica-pop 200,000After another long travel day from Easter Island, we arrived in the northernmost city in Chile, Arica. Arica was won by Chile from Peru in the late 19th century War of the Pacific. The war was fought because Arica's soil is rich with minerals. We arrived at 12:45 at night, so our first goal was to get some sleep. My first impression of Arica was a desert city on the sea. Around Arica are barren sand dunes but down at the water are popular beaches that Chileans love to go to. The Atacama is the dryest desert on Earth, and that is easily believed. While we were in Arica we saw some of the world's oldest mummy's made from the native peoples who lived here, great exhibits on the Tiwanaku and Inca culture, but the highlight was definitely the giant Incan geoglyphs made of small rocks built on a hill. The geoglyphs are of llamas, humans, and other figures of Incan gods. Tonight at 12:00 we are supposed to get on a twelve hour bus journey to Oruro, Bolivia, but getting a visa may be a problem.

I was wondering if you had any information about Orongo? Who lived there? Also, was there just that one town on the Island? and Where could cars and trucks drive to? Were there roads all over the islands?:( ... Love to you all, Gramps
