I wake up and opt for ‘vitamin water’ and yoghurt from the 7/11 for breakfast, but not before I’m bamboozled by the sheer number of drinks for sale. Outside it’s another sunny day in Washington. I spend the morning tapping away on the laptop, the hostel has free wi-fi which in itself is worth 3-10 a day.

I head off to the centre of Washington during the afternoon on the very usable Metro. Proceed to walk round to the front of the White House, lots of tourists posing in front of it. Didn’t see any sign of Bush, I should have called ahead.

For a while I pursue the American dream with a glorious Starbuck Frappo before checking out the books in Barnes & Noble. For the record American book stores have an identical stock of books as their counterparts in the UK, which slightly disappoints me. I note that Barnes & Noble toilets (known as rest-rooms here) are very good, if I’m ever caught short in Washington in the future I’ll head here!

I travel back to the hostel in rush hour on the red Metro line. Offering my seat to an older local woman who declines, then I ponder whether I should reoffer the seat to others. I decide not to.

Get comfortable again in the hostel on the laptop, began to write up this blog properly. As usual it’s MSNBC on TV, discussing the upcoming election. The woman working here is obviously addicted to politics.  I get a slight sense of importance thinking that the seat of government for this nation is just down the road from me.
