It's getting sad now. I am at once anxious to get back home, and to return to my own destinies, whatever they are to be. But also sad to leave the life of travel which is so energizing and interesting. And, leaving behind so much and so many that have become of cherished acquaintance.

The last two weeks have been days wholly beyond my previous experiences and in no way were to be anticipated. It has largely turned out to be quite different than I, or my host, Olivier, were expecting--in our imaginations--our time together to be.

Way back in the spring or early summer, when Olivier initially invited me to join him in the last two weeks of his August holidays, we both imagined a sort of (mild) motorcycle diaries kind of trip; two guys heading down the east side of France. His invitation contributed to setting my schedule to return home. But only by three or four months. I thought, How could I pass on an opportunity to travel in France with a Frenchman?

Well, in the intervening time the chemistries etched the immaginations into quite a different result.
First Olivier reported his car had broken down. (I had imagined train travel). Then he said his girlfriend was objecting to his being away for so long of his holiday time.

By the time I arrived on the scene, Olivier's mother was also into the equation. And to a controlling degree, as it seems to have turned out. Or, maybe it was the mother and the girlfriend in cahoots. I don't know, and I didn't care to delve too deeply into the new formula. I was already penned into the calendar, so to speak, and so was basically taken along, and most graciously integrated I must say.

So, the early, and majority of our time together--Olivier's an mine--has been in the company of his girlfriend and mother, on a trip to southwestern France, in the course of visiting family and friends.

I have taken some time to plot our journies on the map. Some of the nodes are not places we necessarily visited, but are merely points of reference to more closely follow the road route. This is so anyone not knowing where some of the places visited are located--and I surely didn't know of any of them--will be able to associate the pictures and activities with their locations.

My time here in Lusigny-sur-Barse, about 20 km east of Troyes, is now down to hours. I can't write more. I'll try to dump pictures in. Maybe there will be time to annotate them, but I doubt it.

Wow, glad there wasn't TOO much drama. I hope you had fun with the whole family, nonetheless. It sounds like you did!
