I'm finally up to date with the map and where I actually am, Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is still hot and humid (August being Dubrovnik's hottest month), and I am hot and sweaty, and amongst thousands of other tourists--which my friend David calls the "Golden Horde." And I don't like it.

Nevertheless, it must be said that Dubrovnik must be in that book's list of the 100 (or is it 1000?) places to see before you die. I did manage to walk the streets some in the old walled city yesterday late afternoon. No different than climbing over the stones of ruins in the woods of Lycia, Turkey, or elsewhere, does one--or at least I-- wish to be an ancient "fly on the wall," and just be there in another time when life filled the streets in their original dress and purpose.

At this moment, there is not much more to say about Dubrovnik. I have today here before moving on. I'm now on kind of a schedule. So, perhaps more observations later. A laptop with a fuctioning battery may have helped. But now my laptop is so old I need to be plugged in. Whatever happened to the old handwritten log?

The getting here has been a minor adventure. I have kept on the move; internet access has been spotty, and for other time constraints, just haven't been able to keep up with the travel tales. But there have been things of note, particularly in and around Ioannina, Greece. I will try to backfill this stuff.

But to encapsulate, after Ioannina getting first to Tirane, Albania (the south a veritable garbage pit. Sorry, Albanians, but you make the Turks look tidy), to Podgorica, Montenegro, to Dubrovnik, Croatia has been a series of bus rides of the "milk-run" type, and in not particularly well air-conditioned ones at that. It has not been insufferable, but one does need tolerance.

But, now I need to get moving (very slowly) into the day. For the moment I will post some of my pictures from yesterday.
