The flight was long, but I had a window seat, nice neighbours and lots of sleep. I couldn't help glancing at the map on my personal TV screen, thinking about all the wonderful places I was flying over. Was it the closest I had been geographically to the DRC, to the Serengeti, the Ngorogoro? I will simply have to drive next time.

It took a while to unload the plane, and the wheels on the luggage belt seemed to stop in time. I was thankful again that I was travelling so light. Only two small bags, easy enough to carry myself if needs be. But that wasn't a worry. For the first time I can remember I was met at the airport. Mark, my new supervisor was waiting there, probably wondering what on earth he had let himself in for.

It has to be said that without his offer I would have had trouble getting to Pretoria on my own. Jo'burg airport is located closer to Pretoria than Jozi itself, but neither has decent, or infact any public transport. I would have had to rent a taxi for the 45km and blown my budget before I even started. The airport is largely a construction site at the moment. They are preparing for the football World Cup in 2012 and already seem a bit behind compared to the plans on display. The rumour is that a mono-rail, or high speed train linking Pretoria, Jo'burg and the airport will be built, or extended onto the current rail line (that is rather too risky for anyone to use be they local or foreign) Waiting in the line to show my four-year visa, I was mystified why the tourist department had chosen a broken small mammal skull (behind glass) to promote the rich diversity of the southern coast?

Anyway, I'd landed, we'd found the car, had the keys confiscated on our exit from the airport carpark (so that the boot could be checked and to show we had not stolen / hot-wired the car) - and I was on my way to my new home.
