After a rousing morning of shoveling snow in Rapid City, we took my roommate to see Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is just a few minutes outside the city. He'd done some traveling in the U.S., but he hadn't seen much of the American West yet. Since Rushmore is such an American icon, we figured it'd be a perfect place to daytrip.
It was more of a morning trip. We had breakfast in the dining room, which has a fantastic view of the mountain carving, and then did some walking around the facilities, which were brand-spanking new at the time. The Presidential Trail to the base of the mountain was a highlight. We took a few obligatory pictures for my roommate to send home to his family in India.
And then it started. The Revenge of the Roommate! Presumably, his unintended snow-shoveling experience earlier that morning helped incite him to a snowball fight. Pretty soon, my family joined in. Why is it that the guy with the camera always gets in trouble?
Afterwards, we drove around the memorial to the back of the sculpture near Horsethief Lake. The highway was desserted, and seizing our opportunity, we grabbed my roommate and held him aloft for a great photo op.
