We took the ferry (150.00RM/ea) from Penang alll the way to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Indonesian customs was the most disorganized I've ever seen... partway through getting our visas-on-arrival the power went out for the whole building. I lent my flashlight to the customs officer so he could see enough to finish the process, haha.

We took a bus from the port to Medan, a dirty polluted and busy city. We both had no desire to stay here overnight but Bukit Lawang, our next destination, is about 4hrs away so it makes sense to go tomorrow morning. A guesthouse owner in Georgetown recommended the Angel Guesthouse to stay so we went there, and it turns out they also organize guided treks in Bukit Lawang (which is something we were planning to do  anyway) and their package looks really good. So! Tomorrow we have free transport to the jungles of Bukit Lawang and a free place to stay - and the next day we get to do an overnight jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park which is chock-full of different types of monkeys, snakes, flowers (and probably bugs but I'm trying not to think about that part..).

Let me just say, I'm super super excited about this trek. I read a bunch of reviews and blogs of other people who have done this trek and their stories and photos are amazing! Orang-utans will come right up to you, in the wild. So neat! :o)

Okay, other than that - this city sucks. The food here sucks. We have to come back here once more because there's no direct bus from Bukit Lawang to Lake Toba, our next destination. That also sucks. But.... in two days it's monkey time!
