The good word here in Montenegro is that it is Earth's newest country, but you wouldn't know it by the capital Podgorica, a most stiflingly hot, flat and dusty berg. So Beth and I weighed out the options of more heat and dust in Albania, or nice n cool Canadian climate up in the Durmitor mountains. Of course we chose the latter and hightailed it onto the nearest minibus, heading up winding mountain passes to Zabljak (JAB-lee-AK) - Montenegro's highest town and the base for exploring Durmitor.
Sure enough the cool air fit the bill, as did the wild cows and sheep roaming the hills outside of the cheap farmhouse we'd sequestered ourselves into. My recent diet of greasy bread and cheese was also saved by a night in of rice, beans, zucchini, carrots and the local Niksic (Nick-Shitch) beer forced onto us by some guy in a jeep. But the highlight is most wholeheartedly those soaring peaks, and a certain Montenegrin friendliness that is unmatched anywhere in the Western Balkans. The word is out comrades. Zabljak is the new Belgrade. See Commander Beth's blog for a more detailed run-down.

We should write the new Lonely Planet Montenegro
Forget Belgrade, forget Podgorica - Zabliak is where it's at. It's got everything one could ask for, well, except for an ATM machine, but that's only a mere 3 hour bus ride away.
