I went to my friend Lucy's house last night with Georgia, Kayla, Alice, Nik, and Kristin. Today was Kingitanga Day at the Uni (a celebration of the Maori King's Birthday) so classes were cancelled and Lucy invited a bunch of us to come to her house instead of hanging around Hamilton. I of course wouldn't pass up the chance to stay at a Kiwi's home and eat Kiwi food and hang with Kiwi's. They had a beautiful little home with tons of windows and open space nestled right up next to the Cormandel Mountain Range. Lucy and her mother made us a delicious meal. There were two chickens, some kind of potato casserole with pumpkin and capsicum and onion, and some cooked veggies. We ate every bite. Then Lucy made this really good apple feijoa crumble for dessert. She even had ice cream and whipped cream to go with it. After that we hit the hot tub for a couple hours, then watched the Hangover and called it a night.
This morning we had an enormous breakfast with real pancakes, and scrambled eggs, and bacon, and toast, and fruit. Then Lucy took us down to Karangahake Reserve to walk around the gorge and old mining tunnels. I even found glowworms in one of the tunnels. That would happen since I paid almost $200 to go see them a few weeks ago. When we were finished she took us around the little town that is home to L&P soda. Apparently, this lemony mineral spring water was discovered in Paeroa and that's what they used to use to make the soda. I got to try some for the very first time today and it definitely lived up to its reputation as being the best!
