Traveling to Vienna once in a persons life is enough to be grateful for, but having the opportunity to travel there twice and to have people who live there show you their city is a whole different thing entirely.

I had the opportunity to travel and stay with my mothers friend Gabriele and her family who are natives to Vienna. They live on the outskirts of Vienna in a very nice neighborhood that is not only peaceful but beautiful as well. Gabriele, her husband Klaus ( Nicki ), and their daughter Lena Rosa were gracious hosts who showed me around Vienna and all of the beautiful monuments that the city has, as well as telling me some of the history behind the city.

I got to Vienna via bus from Prague and arrived around 8 in the morning at the airport where Gabriele picked me up and took me to her husbands Cafe and Bakery for an amazing breakfast. They brought me some of Nicki's cakes and some great coffee along with some other great breakfast items. After the wonderful welcoming to Vienna we proceeded to go back to their flat and quickly grab some things before heading into the heart of the city.

We took the tram for a very scenic ride into the center of the city where we visited a very eclectic market called the Naschmarkt. In this market they had a variety of goods but mainly foods from all over the world. I saw many kebab stands as well as some other Turkish foods along with Latin and other European foods. After working our way through the awesome yet very crowded market we sat down at a great Sushi restaurant for lunch. Gabriele explained that this was one of the first sushi establishments in Vienna and it was still one of the best. We enjoyed a great lunch and I especially like the bento sushi box that I got, its been a very long time since I've had good sushi and I realized just how much I have missed it.

After lunch we went and walked around Vienna with Gabriele and Lena Rosa showing me the best parts of the city as well as stopping for some great ice cream on the way to the natural history museum, which was one of Lena Rosa's favorites and she decided that was something that I should see while I was there. Vienna has many famous museums for not only art but history as well. The Natural History Museum was a very impressive looking building and the artifacts and items that were inside were just as good.

After the museum we were all pretty tired so we walked back to the tram stop and started the journey home so that we would have some time to rest before the wine tavern that we were scheduled to go to for dinner. The wine tavern that we went to for dinner was very close to their home and had a very relaxed and Viennese feel to it. The wine was very good but the schnitzel  was even better, it did not disappoint one bit. We were there with some of Gabriele and Nicki's friends who were very nice and have a daughter that is Lena Rosa's age. Both of the girls kept coming and going from outside where they were playing, and being the kid that I am i decided to follow them out and run around with them for a while which was a lot of fun. After the amazing dinner we returned to the house and went to bed getting ready for the next day of exploring Vienna.

Unfortunately, when we all got up in the morning Gabriele was in a lot of pain due to a bad tooth and she needed us to take her to the emergency dentist. Gabriele. Nicki, Lena Rosa and I got in the car and drove her to the dentist and after dropping her off Nicki, Lena Rosa and I went off to explore a park that was near by and had great views of the city. We hiked around the park for an hour or two which was incredibly beautiful and it even had a small pond in the woods. After we finished hiking around the park we decided to go get some lunch at an Italian restaurant that had some great pizza. Nicki, Lena Rosa and I had a very good lunch and after that we went back to pick up Gabriele who was understandably not feeling very well. We all decided that it would be better to go back to the cafe and bakery and have some good coffee and cakes during the rainy afternoon. Nicki showed me the movie his shop has explaining the production of his chocolate and everything that goes into making it. We spent a very relaxing afternoon at the shop and afterwards returned to their house to hang out a little more before I had to go back to the bus station and return to Prague.

The weekend in Vienna was great and I was able to see a lot and finally meet one of my moms best friends that she is always talking about. Gabriele and her family were great hosts and I definitely owe them and will show them around California when they come to visit. With that my time in Vienna was over and it was back to Prague I went.

Niko, what a great story! We are very honored to be part of it. Come back to Vienna any time. I wish you a good time in Prague, Italy and Croatia before you go back to California. Looking forward to seeing you again - wherever in this world!

Margie, how nice to say that about me. I really enjoyed being with you both in 1984 and 1994 when I was visiting Karen in California. Time has been flying and it is more than overdue to get together again all of us. Let's hope that this will be soon. Hope that you and your family are well and happy. Are you on facebook?
