Tuesday 18th September

Barrie is feeling much better today. We had some time to relax at the hotel then it was about an hour's drive back to the airport to catch the flight to Shanghai.

"Xi’an is for yesterday, Beijing is for today, Shanghai is for tomorrow". The financial capital of China of 23 million people is one of Asia’s most influential and fast growing cities. We were held up briefly at the airport as Jeevons the local guide and bus were trapped in the city centre because of the protest against the Japanese (and also we think it was because it was a sensitive day as 18 September 1936 was the date when Japan invaded China)

First stop in the city was the Shanghai museum. The building is situated in the People’s Square in the heart of the city. We had only an hour to spend here and could have enjoyed it a lot longer as displays are beautifully set out and are very interesting. Barrie and I spent the time looking at the Bronze Age section and it was hard to believe these relics have been resurrected from thousands of years BC.

We then went to the French Concession, an area once designated for the French in the 1930’s, in Luwan's Huaihai Road and a popular shopping and dining spots for tourists. During the free time we found a Happy Hour at a bar and a large group of us enjoyed a very welcome white wine and the free refill.

To dinner and afterwards a cruise on the Huangpu River to view the wonderful sight of the skyscrapers lit at night. A wonderful ending to a great day.
