Monday 16th August. Phoenix - Sedona ( via the Grand Canyon ) 580ks
After relishing the kind hospitality of Andy and Di, we left for the Grand Canyon. A couple of hours into our journey we came across a nasty car accident that had only just happened. Happily we can report that there were no fatalities. Amazing, considering that one of the SUV's had a tyre blow out and rolled before mercifully landing the right way up. A complete write-off. We helped out for an hour or so before continuing on our way. Another sobering experience.
The rugged Grand Canyon, a depth of 1.6ks, is absolutely breathtaking.... one of those breathtaking landscapes no photo could ever do justice to. It didn't deter me from trying though!
We left the park around 4.30pm, a slow drive due to roadworks. The freeway to Sedona was great though. Di had painted such a beautiful picture of Sedona - it just had to be our destination. Prior to our arrival we drove through the dramaticly stunning Oak Creek Canyon. Late as it was for us, we couldn't have driven through at a better time as the sun was setting and playing shadows on the red rock faces. Soon darkness fell and we passed the twinkling lights of all the luxury lodges, spas and houses nestled at the bottom of the gorge. It was really lovely. We hit our inn at 7.40pm. Starving, we raced out for what we were craving - a delicious Indian feast.
Tuesday 17th August. Sedona - Needles. 414ks
Sedona is so beautiful we have had to slot it into our list of favourite cities. Surrounded by untouched forest, magnificent natural red rock formations, and state parks, Sedona attracts many visitors. A clear hot sunny day (sorry Cantabrians) we spent the morning sightseeing and checking out some of the fabulous art galleries.
Noon saw us in the truck heading west on the famous Route 66.
Awesome scenery and a well utilised railway network. Often four engines hauling some very long trains. Indian reservations scattered along the way.
Oh dear, this sounds rather hurried, doesn't it.
With so much to organise for our journey home this will be the last of our stories until we do a wrap up when we reach Christchurch. A Boys Blog too.
Catch you soon...........................
