Tuesday 20th April. Comodoro  Rivadavia - Rio Gallegos. 817ks

Left town at 9.30 am. Following the coastal road in the sunshine for a good while was a lovely start to the day. The air is extremely dry, a wrinkle creating humidity of 15%!
At last we saw the elusive flocks of guanacos and rheas. Rheas are big flightless ostrich- type birds and when they run they look like big flying balls. Quite comical really. This inevitably happened whenever we stopped to take their photos. When we pulled up for lunch we spotted a couple of tame and very photogenic guanacos posing for the cameras.
The most attention seeking one got up to follow Dave and bit him on the leg when he wouldn't play with him!
Fabulous weather and endless desert scrubby vegetation. Vegetation in the desert is mostly spiny, (to fend off animal visitors) low domed plants with deep root systems to limit the drying effects of the sun and wind. Soon our journey was slowed down by the many guanacos grazing roadside. Too many road kills to ignore! A lot more sheep farming today.
We arrived Rio Gallegos 7.30 pm and spent over an hour trying to find a hotel. The first one we looked for didn't exist the second one was full, and two had closed up for the winter. It was a great relief when we found a lovely old guesthouse type of hotel and unpacked after a huge day on the road. Then we decided to treat ourselves - to dinner at Club Britanico. Argentine steak and all the trimmings. Yummmmmmm.
