Wed. 01 Jul. Rezekne- Vilnius. 271 k's.
We feel really mean telling you it's another sunny day, 26 degrees, blue skies. Tempting fate again, I feel!
Heading across the Latvia/Lithuania border today to Vilnius, and not far to the Polish border tomorrow. In Latvia we noticed that a lot of the old log houses are being used as barns or to store wood and many new brick houses are being built. The walls of both are incredibly thick to keep out the chill of the winter snow. Temperatures can plummet below -20 deg.C. And that's probably why there aren't a lot of grazing animals around.
Lots of foxes though. In fact, we spotted a Silver Fox today. Was that you, Brian?
Across the border into Lithuania at 1pm. That was exciting, no stopping, document checks or customs.
Countryside not dissimilar to Latvia. The same house proud people with vege. patches and colourful flower gardens. The odd leftover Soviet apartment block on the landscape. Forestry. Fields of purple lupins. Ladas, not so many of those.
Massive piles of chopped wood and hay bales everywhere, in preparation for winter. Lakes, nestled in amongst the fir trees.(Think of beautiful calendars)! And that's about it.
The roads are heaps better than those of Western Russia. But that's a Boy's Blog story.
Checked into the Congress Hotel in the centre of town, mid afternoon. It's lovely and comfy.
Camping from tomorrow.............( We'll see, Ed )

Thanks Susi, there is still a lot of go in the old silver fox..or grey ghost. Some great photos coming through. Tell David he is not funny when he is being silly :-). Pleased to read you maybe using the Kumar shortly, enough of the 5 Star accommodation.Looking forward to the boys blog. Still no punctures or real dents to report?. It has been a real pleasure sitting back in NZ in a few degrees of warmth and you enjoying the 20's to 30's.

cooling the vino
So you travel fast! Might know fast jet pilots are all the same! Would love to see you anytime just aim for Angouleme/Cognac!!! Well that's what they call the nearest airport too. However we are on the Western side of France, quite a journey across if you manage the Alps and the Massif Central (very picturesque) ...but can arrange to have pool ready, wine in the chiller and large bed for some well deserved R & R. It will seem quite tame here after all your adventures.
Take care en route
